Professor Hilton from Aston University did a study to see how true the myth of the 5 second rule holds.
Through a simple experimentation of dropping different types of foods on different types of floors, they were able to determine that time was a critical component of figuring out the amount of bacteria aggregating on the food.
This is a long assumed idea.. but now here are the numbers to back it up!
More interestingly, there was a survey done about people’s tendency to eat food that fell… 87% of people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so. 55% of those that would, or have, eaten food dropped in the floor are women. 81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the 5 second rule
